The Business of Independent Film-Making: Opportunities and Challenges of Working in Pakistan - A Conversation with Ethan Casey, author of Alive and Well in Pakistan. Filmmakers Fawad Butt and Ethan Casey will be in Chicago to discuss their "Alive and Well in Pakistan" documentary film project on the human dimension of contemporary Pakistan, one year into the project. They'll summarize their experience dealing with the business-side challenges that face any independent filmmaker, from finding financing and building strategic alliances, to marketing and planning for predictably unpredictable "x factors". They also will discuss the realities of working on the ground in Pakistan, from obtaining visa approval, to scheduling appointments, to working with unreliable electricity and Internet access in a country suffering severely from the global economic crisis. Fawad Butt just returned from several weeks in Pakistan and will report specifically on his experiences during his recent trip. Both filmmakers, and Seattle-based photographer Peter Sabo, plan to return to Pakistan in March 2009. Ethan Casey is the author of Alive and Well in Pakistan: A Human Journey in a Dangerous Time (2004), which the Harvard International Review calls "compulsory reading for anyone visiting Pakistan."
